Discover more about Royal Castle of Cognac

The Château Royal de Cognac, also known as Château des Valois or Château François Ier, stands majestically overlooking the Charente River. Its story began in the 10th century as a fortress built to repel Norman invasions. In the 15th century, it transformed into a grand residence, most notably as the birthplace of King Francis I in 1494, one of France's most celebrated monarchs. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone numerous rebuilds and witnessed pivotal moments in French history. During the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, it served as a strategic stronghold for both Protestant and Catholic forces. In 1795, Baron Otard, recognizing the castle's unique environment for aging eaux-de-vie, acquired it and established his Cognac house, saving it from demolition. The thick walls and humid cellars, a result of the Charente River's proximity, provide ideal conditions for maturing the brandies. Today, the Château Royal de Cognac is a designated historical monument, offering visitors a glimpse into both French history and the art of Cognac production. Explore the Renaissance rooms, the King's apartments (by appointment), and the ancient cellars. Guided tours in French and English reveal the secrets of Cognac making, culminating in a tasting of Baron Otard and D'Ussé Cognacs. The experience intertwines the legacy of French royalty with the craftsmanship of one of the world's most renowned spirits.
