Discover more about Château de Bressieux

The Château de Bressieux, a former stronghold dating back to the 13th century, stands as a testament to the region's rich medieval past. Located in the commune of Bressieux in the Isère department, this castle was once the heart of the Barony of Bressieux, one of the four baronies of the Dauphiné. In 1612, it was elevated to a marquisate by King Louis XIII. The castle's construction, primarily of pink bricks, showcases the architectural style of the era. Today, the ruins are open for exploration, offering visitors a glimpse into the past. The site is also used for live-action role-playing games, adding a unique dimension to its historical appeal. The remains of the castle have been recognized as a monument historique since 1904. Visitors can explore the well-preserved gate towers and the high cylindrical keep. A climb to the top of the renovated keep rewards with stunning views of the northern Isère region, the Bièvre plain, and the Chambaran plateau. The castle's strategic location on a hill offers a commanding view of the surrounding landscape. The pink brick towers add to the charm of the site. Excavations from 1983 to 1992 have revealed much about the castle's history and the lives of its inhabitants from the 11th to the 18th centuries. The on-site museum displays archaeological finds, offering insights into daily life within the castle walls. Bressieux has long been a source of inspiration for artists, including Johan Barthold Jongkind, whose 1879 watercolor is displayed at the Louvre. Today, the castle hosts various events, including a popular medieval festival in July.
