Discover more about Entree des Cuves de Sassenage

The Cuves de Sassenage, located in the Isère department of France, offer a fascinating journey into the depths of the earth. These caves, nestled at the foot of the Vercors Massif, have attracted visitors for centuries and were even considered one of the seven wonders of the Dauphiné. Formed over millions of years by the underground river Germe, the caves feature narrow passages and unique geological formations. Guided tours lead visitors through the subterranean galleries, where they can admire stalactites, stalagmites, and the crystal-clear waters of the Furon stream. The caves maintain a cool temperature of 12°C year-round, so bringing a warm layer is recommended. The Cuves de Sassenage are also steeped in legend, most notably the tale of Mélusine, a mythical fairy said to inhabit the caves. According to local lore, Mélusine's tears can be found in the Furon's riverbed as “ophthalmic stones” that heal irritated eyes. A sound and light show during the tour brings the legend to life. Explorations of the cave system began in the 18th century, with guided tours becoming a regular feature by the 19th century. Today, visitors can choose from classic guided tours, speleological outings, and even an underground acrobatic course. Special events are also held for Halloween and Christmas. In 2025, the Cuves de Sassenage celebrate 160 years of operation, discovery and wonder, with a program of exhibitions, conferences, animations and shows.
