Discover more about Vallée fossile des Rimets

The Vallée Fossile des Rimets, located in Rencurel, within the Coulmes region, is a captivating natural site of significant geological importance. This 'fossil valley' presents a remarkable window into the past, revealing the story of the Vercors massif's formation over millions of years. Around 200 million years ago, during the secondary era, the area was part of a vast ocean, similar to the Bahamas reefs. The accumulation of marine organism debris formed the rocks that constitute the Vercors massif today. The site reveals evidence of a warm, shallow sea teeming with life, where the remains of organisms were deposited and cemented into sedimentary rock, known as 'Urgonian limestone', approximately 120 million years ago. Erosion then carved out the valley we see today. The valley is not only a geological treasure but also boasts diverse flora and fauna. The landscape features meadows, lapiaz (limestone pavements), and beech forests, with dry grasslands that support numerous butterflies and orchids. In addition to its natural history, the Vallée Fossile des Rimets also bears witness to human history. The ruins of a farm, burned down during the Second World War in July 1944, serve as a reminder of peasant life in the area until the mid-20th century. The oven, restored in 2010, is the only remaining structure from the destroyed hamlet. Visitors can explore the 'Rock Memory' geological trail, which provides insights into the valley's formation. Educational materials and panels help interpret the geological features and understand the site's history.
