Ertatsminda Saint Estate Church: A Medieval Georgian Treasure

Ertatsminda Saint Estate Church, dedicated to Saint Eustace (Estate), is a captivating medieval cathedral nestled in the village of Ertatsminda, in Georgia's Shida Kartli region. Dating back to the 13th century, the church stands as a testament to the country's rich architectural and religious history. The name "Ertatsminda" is derived from "Estatetsminda", which means St. Eustace in Georgian. The church's architecture is a prime example of a cross-domed design, adorned with elaborate stone carvings and constructed from carefully hewn blocks of yellow sandstone. The complex includes the church, a wall, a bell tower, and the remains of monastic buildings. Inside, visitors can admire the partially preserved 17th-century murals depicting scenes from the lives of St. Eustace and St. George. A unique feature is the head of Paata Saakadze, son of a controversial military commander, buried within the church. Over the centuries, Ertatsminda has undergone several restorations, reflecting its resilience through earthquakes and invasions.
