Discover more about Sint Pietersberg, ENCI-groeve

The Sint Pietersberg, a hill just south of Maastricht, and the adjacent ENCI-groeve (ENCI quarry) offer a blend of natural beauty and industrial history. The Sint Pietersberg isn't actually a mountain but a more than 100 meter high hill. The ENCI-groeve is a former limestone quarry where the Eerste Nederlandse Cement Industrie (ENCI) extracted marl for cement production from the 1920s until 2018. After production stopped, Natuurmonumenten (a Dutch nature conservation organization) took over management, allowing nature to reclaim the area. Today, it's a unique landscape featuring valleys, plateaus, grasslands, and water features. Visitors can explore well-maintained trails offering panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the Maas River. The area is known for its diverse flora and fauna, including rare orchids and the protected southern shore dragonfly. Birdwatchers may spot various bird species, including the Eurasian eagle-owl. The quarry's geological formations tell the story of the earth's history, with rocks dating back to the Maastrichtian period (named after Maastricht) at the end of the Cretaceous. A key attraction is the uitzichtplatform (viewing platform) on the Luikerweg, offering a stunning overview of the groeve. A staircase with 215 steps leads down into the groeve.
