History of Fante

The Fante people, one of the Akan ethnic groups, are believed to have migrated from the Bono Kingdom (now part of modern-day Ghana) during the late 15th century. They settled along the coastal regions of what is today known as the Central Region of Ghana. The Fante people established themselves as skilled traders, especially in gold and other natural resources.
In the early 18th century, the Fante states formed the Fante Confederacy to protect themselves against external threats, such as the Ashanti Empire. The Fante region was one of the first areas in Ghana to encounter European traders, beginning with the Portuguese in the 15th century. Over the centuries, the Dutch, British, and Danes also established themselves along the coast, setting up trading posts and forts. These interactions significantly influenced Fante society, culture, and economy, particularly through the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Cape Coast Castle, originally built by the Swedes in 1653 and later taken over by the British, became one of the most prominent slave trading posts in West Africa. The castle served as a holding pen where enslaved Africans were kept before being shipped across the Atlantic.
