Lower St Michael's Cave: A Subterranean Cathedral

Lower St Michael's Cave, also known as New St. Michael's Cave, is a captivating natural wonder located within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve in Gibraltar. Unlike the more well-known St Michael's Cave (also referred to as Old St. Michael's Cave), which has been known for over 2,000 years, Lower St Michael's Cave was only discovered in 1942 during World War II.Royal Engineers accidentally stumbled upon this hidden cave system while blasting a new entrance to the lower chambers of St Michael's Cave for use as an emergency hospital. The discovery revealed a cavern of extraordinary beauty, untouched for an estimated 20,000 years. Inside, visitors are greeted by a mesmerizing display of white, grey, and red stalactite columns that resemble a cathedral, complete with a pulpit, chancel, and organ pipes.What sets Lower St Michael's Cave apart is its remarkable collection of speleothems – a variety of cave formations including stalactites, stalagmites, rim stone, helictites, columns, coral rocks, flowstone, straws, and curtains. The cave also features a stunning underground lake, approximately 37 meters long and holding an estimated 200,000 liters of crystal-clear water.Today, Lower St Michael's Cave is accessible to the public through guided tours. These tours typically last around three hours and involve some scrambling and minor climbing with ropes. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy shoes and casual clothing.
