  • Ferry

    The primary way to reach Mount Athos is by ferry from Ouranoupoli or Ierissos. From Ouranoupoli, ferries depart daily to Dafni, the main port on Mount Athos. From Dafni, you can take a bus to Karyes, the administrative center. From Karyes, arrange transportation to Zografou Monastery, which is located on the southwestern side of the Athos peninsula. Keep in mind that access to Mount Athos is restricted to men only, and a special entry permit (Diamonitirion) is required, which must be obtained in advance from the Mount Athos Pilgrims' Bureau in Thessaloniki. The cost of the Diamonitirion is approximately €30 for non-Orthodox visitors. Ferry tickets range from €10 to €20. Alternatively, a speedboat from Ouranoupoli to Zografou Monastery can be arranged for a quicker, more private transfer. The cost for a water taxi from Daphne to Ouranoupoli is about €200.

    From Zografou Monastery, the Holy Cave of Saint Cosmas is approximately a 30-minute walk. Follow the marked trails from the monastery towards the location of Gerakofilia.
