Discover more about Kaiser's Bridge

Kaiser's Bridge, located in Gastouri, Corfu, is a historical landmark that evokes the era of Kaiser Wilhelm II. At the beginning of the 20th century, the German Emperor purchased the Achilleion Palace as his summer residence. To ensure direct access to his favorite beach, he commissioned the construction of a bridge. Carl Ludwig Sprenger, the botanical architect of the palace gardens, designed the bridge to arch over the coastal road, connecting the palace grounds to the shoreline. The bridge allowed the Kaiser to avoid the main road and maintain his privacy while traveling to the beach. Locals named the bridge in honor of its owner. During World War II, the bridge suffered damage when the central section was destroyed to allow military vehicles to pass. Today, visitors can still experience a part of Kaiser's Bridge. The remaining section leads to a pebbled beach stretching about 1 km. While the beach is unorganized, a nearby tavern offers refreshments. The site provides a window into Corfu's past, and its proximity to the Achilleion Palace makes it a worthwhile stop for those exploring the island's history.
