Overview
Kanoni, located on the peninsula south of Corfu Town, is arguably the most iconic and photographed spot on the island. Its name originates from a cannon placed here in 1798 by the French to protect the island. Today, Kanoni offers visitors a blend of historical significance and scenic splendor.The area was once the heart of the ancient city of Corfu, founded in the 8th century BC. While little remains of this ancient settlement, the spirit of the past lingers. Kanoni's main attractions include the 17th-century Vlacherna Monastery, perched on a tiny islet and accessible via a short causeway, and Pontikonisi (Mouse Island), a verdant islet with a Byzantine chapel. Boats frequently depart from Vlacherna to Mouse Island.Kanoni provides stunning views, especially of planes landing at Corfu's airport due to its unique location. Visitors can enjoy coffee or a meal at one of the clifftop cafes while taking in the panorama. The area is a popular tourist destination with hotels, restaurants and shops.
