The Monastery of Pantokrator, standing proudly on the summit of Mount Pantokrator (906m), is a beacon of history and spirituality on Corfu. The mountain, once known as Istoni, now bears the name of the monastery that graces its peak. The monastery's location offers unparalleled panoramic views of the entire island, the Ionian Sea, and the coasts of Albania and Greece. On exceptionally clear days, you might even catch a glimpse of Italy. The original monastery was built in 1347 with contributions from 23 villages, but it was destroyed in 1537 during an Ottoman siege. The current structure dates back to 1689, with its facade updated in the 19th century. Inside, visitors can admire well-preserved frescoes from the 14th and 17th centuries, as well as a gilded wooden iconostasis created in 1711. The monastery celebrates the Feast of the Transfiguration of Christ every August 6th, drawing pilgrims from across the island. While no monks reside permanently today, the church remains active. A small shop within the monastery sells religious items and Corfiot souvenirs. Outside, a café offers refreshments.
