The Sanctuary of Artemis Gorgo, near Corfu Town, is a historical landmark that provides a window into ancient Greek civilization. Constructed around 580 BC, this Doric temple was dedicated to Artemis and represents early stone construction. Discovered in 1910, the site reveals the foundations and a few stone plinths of what was once a significant temple.While the sanctuary itself offers limited views of the ruins, its historical importance and tranquil setting make it a worthwhile visit for history enthusiasts. The temple once stood approximately 48 meters long and 22 meters wide, featuring a Doric order with 8 pillars in the façade and 17 on its sides. The most significant artifact, the temple's pediment, is now displayed at the Archaeological Museum of Corfu.The pediment depicts Artemis as Gorgon, surrounded by her children, mythical creatures, and battle scenes. This well-preserved sculpture offers insights into ancient Greek art and mythology.
