Discover more about The Achilleion Palace

Nestled on a verdant hill in Gastouri, about 10 km southwest of Corfu Town, the Achilleion Palace stands as a testament to imperial grandeur and a love for Greek mythology. Constructed in the late 1890s for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, affectionately known as Sisi, the palace served as a refuge from the stresses of royal life and a celebration of her admiration for ancient Greece. The palace, designed in the Pompeian style by Italian architect Raffaele Caritto, showcases a blend of neoclassical elegance and romantic symbolism. Its architecture and gardens are adorned with numerous statues and sculptures inspired by Greek mythology, most notably those of Achilles, the Homeric hero after whom the palace is named. Visitors can explore the grand halls, adorned with marble sculptures and artwork, including pieces by Claude Monet. The palace's terraces offer panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding landscape. After Sisi's assassination in 1898, the palace was purchased by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany in 1907. He renovated the palace, adding his own touches, including the imposing statue of Achilles Triumphant. The Achilleion has also served as a military hospital, a headquarters during wartime, and even a casino. Today, the Achilleion operates as a museum, hosting cultural events and offering visitors a glimpse into its rich history and the lives of its prominent inhabitants. While the palace has undergone renovations, its imperial gardens remain open, featuring a mix of formal European landscaping and Mediterranean flora. Visitors can wander through terraced gardens, admire classical statues, and enjoy the panoramic views. The gardens are home to the iconic statue of Achilles Dying, commissioned by Sisi to reflect her personal emotions and admiration for the hero.
