Discover more about Herakleion Unknown Soldier Statue

The Unknown Soldier Statue stands in the heart of Heraklion, within Eleftherias (Liberty) Square, serving as a powerful symbol of remembrance and respect for those who have given their lives in service. The full-length statue, made of Pentelic marble, is the work of artist Christoforos Natsios. Its construction was decided in 1924 by the Association of Reserve Officers of the Prefecture of Heraklion, and it was unveiled on July 8, 1928. The statue portrays a soldier in complete dependence and on standby. The monument is decorated with wreaths on national anniversaries and on the anniversary of the Battle of Crete, paying tribute to those who lost their lives for freedom. Reliefs on three sides depict Cretan warriors rebelling against the Turks, a Cretan mother sending her son to war, and the Tower of Xopatera in Messara. After World War I, erecting monuments in honor of soldiers became common. Due to the large number of fallen and the inexhaustible list of names, monuments were dedicated to all soldiers, adopting the name “Unknown Soldier”. The Unknown Soldier Statue is more than just a monument; it is a place for quiet contemplation, set amidst the vibrant atmosphere of Heraklion.
