Discover more about Monastery of the Holy Trinity at Meteora

The Monastery of the Holy Trinity, or Agia Triada, is one of Meteora's most iconic and dramatically situated monasteries. Founded in the 15th century, possibly by the monk Dometius, it clings to a steep rock pinnacle, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the town of Kalabaka and the Peneios River. Accessing the monastery involves a descent and subsequent climb of approximately 140 steps, a journey that adds to the sense of pilgrimage. The church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is a small, two-columned cruciform structure with a dome, showcasing Byzantine architecture. Frescoes, primarily from the 18th century, adorn the interior, with earlier decorations dating back to the 15th century. A small chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist, carved into the rock, can also be found near the entrance. Historically, the monastery faced periods of decline and damage, particularly during World War II. However, renovations in the 1970s restored it, and it remains an active monastery open to visitors. The Monastery of the Holy Trinity also gained international recognition after being featured in the James Bond film “For Your Eyes Only”. Today, only one monk lives in the monastery. Visitors can explore the church, admire the frescoes, and soak in the stunning views from the monastery's balcony.
