Discover more about Holy Monastery Vytouma, Kalampaka, Trikala

The Holy Monastery of Vytouma, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is a historic nunnery located on the eastern slopes of Mount Koziakas, approximately 540 meters above sea level. Situated near Kalampaka, it stands as a testament to spiritual heritage in the region. Founded in 1161 by Konstantinos Tarchaniotis and his wife Zoe, the monastery has undergone several transformations throughout its history. Today, the complex includes the catholicon (main church) and a chapel, surrounded by newer monastic buildings that reflect its growth and restoration. The catholicon, originally a parish church until the 18th century, was rebuilt in 1600 as a three-aisled basilica with a raised central aisle and a narthex added in 1662. The monastery's conversion to a women's monastery in 1952 marked a period of significant prosperity and development. Inside the monastery enclosure, visitors can explore the chapel dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, constructed in 1559. The catholicon features a remarkable wood-carved iconostasis and painted decorations dating back to 1600. Legend has it that behind the catholicon's sacred step lies a cave where the icon of the Virgin Mary of Kalampakiotissa was found, inspiring the monastery's dedication. The monastery also has two more recent churches: Agia Efemia and Agios Alexios (1986) and Agioi Megalomartires Georgios and Demetrios, with mosaics and wall paintings. Visitors can stroll through the well-kept gardens, enjoying the peaceful ambiance and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The monastery holds a fair on August 15th, drawing many to the region.
