Discover more about Evreon Martyron (Jewish Martyrs Square)

Evreon Martyron, also known as Jewish Martyrs Square, is a significant historical site located in the heart of Rhodes Old Town. This square serves as a memorial to the Jewish community of Rhodes, particularly honoring those who lost their lives during the Holocaust. The square stands as a solemn reminder of the struggles faced by the Jewish population throughout history. Originally, the area was a thriving Jewish quarter with homes and shops. However, it was bombed during World War II, and a small park and square were established in its place. The current fountain, adorned with three seahorses, replaced an earlier one destroyed during the war. The Holocaust Memorial, dedicated on June 23, 2002, stands in memory of the Jewish victims from Rhodes and the island of Kos. The memorial is inscribed in six languages, including Hebrew, Greek, English, French, Italian and Ladino. The Jewish community in Rhodes has a rich history dating back to the 2nd century BC. In the 16th century, many Sephardic Jews, who had been expelled from Spain, arrived in Rhodes. They established a vibrant community and the Jewish Quarter became known as "La Juderia". In July 1944, the Nazis deported most of Rhodes' Jewish community to Auschwitz. Only a small number survived. Today, Evreon Martyron is a place for locals and tourists to reflect on the history and resilience of the Jewish community of Rhodes. The square is surrounded by cafes and shops, offering visitors a chance to soak in the historical ambiance.
