Discover more about Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos

The Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos, also known as Evangelismos Church, is a prominent and beautiful cathedral located in Rhodes City. Situated in Eleftherias Square near Mandraki Harbor, it stands as a testament to the island's diverse history and architectural influences. Constructed in the 1920s during the Italian occupation of Rhodes, the church's design is a striking example of Gothic Revival architecture. It was modeled after the medieval Church of St. John, which was once the main church of the Knights of St. John in the Medieval City. This deliberate imitation reflects the Italian architects' desire to connect with the island's rich past while also introducing their own artistic vision. After Rhodes and the other Dodecanese islands were reunified with mainland Greece in 1947, the church transitioned into a Greek Orthodox cathedral. To adapt the space for Orthodox worship, necessary decorative reforms were undertaken. The interior was further enhanced with captivating frescoes by the renowned Greek artist Fotis Kontoglou, adding a unique Neo-Byzantine touch to the church's already impressive features. The exterior of the church is characterized by Gothic-style doors and windows, pointed arches, ribbed vaults and decorative stonework. The structure is made of local sandstone, the same material used in the Medieval Town. A tall bell tower with a clock stands at the side entrance, facing the harbor, making it a visible landmark. Inside, visitors can admire the modern Orthodox icons and mosaics that reflect traditional Byzantine artistry. The altar and stained-glass windows create a serene and spiritual atmosphere, while intricate marble decorations enhance the church's majestic appearance.
