The Archaeological Park of Amphipolis invites visitors to step back in time and explore the remnants of a once-thriving ancient city. Founded in 437 BC as an Athenian colony, Amphipolis held a strategic position near the Strymon River and the gold mines of Mount Pangaion. This location made it a coveted prize, leading to its control by the Spartans and later Philip II of Macedon. Today, the park reveals layers of history, with ruins from the Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Early Christian, and Byzantine periods. Key features include the remains of the ancient city walls, which once stretched for 7.5 km, and various sanctuaries dedicated to gods like Athena and Artemis. One of the park's most iconic monuments is the Lion of Amphipolis, a massive 4th-century BC marble sculpture believed to be a tomb marker. The Amphipolis Tomb, discovered in 2012, is another significant find, boasting intricate architectural elements and wall paintings. Excavations have also uncovered public and private buildings, offering insights into the daily life of Amphipolis's diverse population. Visitors can also explore the Archaeological Museum of Amphipolis, which houses a collection of artifacts unearthed from the site, providing further context to the city's history and culture.
