Perched on a hill on the east bank of the Strymon River, the Byzantine Tower of Marmariou offers a glimpse into the region's rich past. Erected in 1367, according to its inscription, the tower was strategically positioned to oversee the ancient bridge that once crossed the river. The tower's construction reflects the economic conditions of the time, utilizing ancient materials from the nearby city of Amphipolis. It was built by Ioannis Megas Primikirios and Alexios Megas Stratopedarchis, high officials from Constantinople who owned land in the area. Beyond its function as an observatory, the tower also served as a storage facility for the agricultural products of neighboring settlements. Today, only one floor of the original structure remains covered, with just one wall standing on the second floor. Despite its partial ruin, the tower offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness a Byzantine tower up close and appreciate the stunning views of Amphipolis and the Strymon River. The site is easily accessible from the highway.
