Discover more about Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica

The Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica, located in the heart of Hagåtña, Guam, is a testament to the island's rich history and strong Catholic faith. As the first Catholic church in the Pacific, its origins trace back to 1669 when Padre Diego Luís de San Vitores, a Jesuit missionary, established a humble chapel with the help of the local Chamorro people. This marked the beginning of Spanish colonization and the spread of Catholicism throughout the Mariana Islands. Over the centuries, the cathedral has undergone several transformations. The original chapel, made of rough logs and nipa thatch, was replaced by a more permanent coral stone structure in 1670. This structure stood for nearly three centuries until it was destroyed during the Second Battle of Guam in 1944. The present cathedral-basilica was dedicated on April 20, 1959. The current building, with its white façade and prominent bell tower, is a familiar landmark in downtown Hagåtña. The main entrance features a large stained-glass window depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. Inside, the cathedral enshrines the revered statue of Santa Marian Kamalen, the Patroness of Guam, a significant symbol of local devotion. The National Museum of the Dulce Nombre de María, located above the Chapel of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, features rotating displays of inspirational art by local artists. The cathedral-basilica is more than just a historical site; it is a vibrant center of faith and community. Parishioners regularly attend Sunday Masses, sacred liturgies, and annual events. Visitors are welcome to embrace the island's Catholic history and identity.
