Agat Unit | Ga'an Point: Where History Meets the Pacific

Agat Unit | Ga'an Point, located on the southern coast of Guam, is a captivating blend of natural beauty and historical significance. As part of the War in the Pacific National Historical Park, Ga'an Point marks a crucial site in the Battle of Guam during World War II. In 1944, Hågat Beach, which stretches from Bangi Point to Apaca Point, was selected as the southern landing site for US forces aiming to secure the Orote Peninsula. Ga'an Point, a coral outcrop at the center of Hågat Beach, became the focal point of the invasion. The Japanese heavily fortified the area, constructing pillboxes and blockhouses into the limestone headland, making the terrain a formidable defense. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved remains of these fortifications, including Japanese guns relocated to the site after the war. Among the most significant remnants are the concealed pillboxes at the end of Ga'an Point, which remarkably went unnoticed by American intelligence before the battle. These bunkers played a crucial role in the Japanese defense and were among the last fortifications to fall. A large L-shaped reinforced concrete pillbox, located just north of the Japanese stronghold, features a small opening facing the ocean for firing guns and an observation post above it. Visitors can also see a Japanese inscription on the concrete wall of the blockhouse. Today, Ga'an Point stands as a place of remembrance, with the flags of the United States, Japan, and Guam flying in memory of those who perished during the conflict. The park offers a serene environment for hiking, snorkeling, and swimming, allowing visitors to appreciate Guam's natural heritage while reflecting on its history.
