Agat Unit | Ga'an Point: A Historical Landmark

Agat Unit | Ga'an Point, situated in Hågat (Agat), Guam, is a poignant reminder of the island's crucial role in World War II. As part of the War in the Pacific National Historical Park, Ga'an Point marks the southern landing site of U.S. forces during the Battle of Guam in July 1944. The area, stretching from Bangi Point to Apaca Point, was strategically chosen to secure the Orote Peninsula.Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved Japanese fortifications, including pillboxes and gun emplacements, offering a tangible connection to the past. Two relocated Japanese guns, a 200mm short-barrel coastal defense gun and a dual-purpose 25mm anti-aircraft gun, are on display. These remnants stand against the backdrop of the clear blue ocean, providing a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance.Ga'an Point also holds cultural significance, with the flags of the United States, Japan, and Guam flying in memory of those who died during the conflict. The site serves as a place for reflection and learning, with historical markers and artifacts that tell the story of the island's strategic importance during the war. Visitors can also access Hågat Beach from the parking area, following a paved path past the restrooms to the historic Japanese guns and fortifications. The beach is shallow and rocky, with seagrass beds offshore, and the remains of WWII-era vehicles can be seen offshore.
