Discover more about Castle Cornet

Castle Cornet, a prominent landmark in Guernsey, has guarded St Peter Port harbour for over 800 years. Built on a former tidal island, the castle's origins date back to the 13th century, when it was constructed to defend Guernsey after the division of the Duchy of Normandy. Over the centuries, it has been a key strategic point, witnessing sieges, battles, and periods of peace. Today, Castle Cornet is a popular visitor attraction, offering a fascinating glimpse into the island's history. Within its walls, you'll find five museums: The Story of Castle Cornet, the Maritime Museum, the 201 Squadron (RAF) Museum, the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry Museum, and the Royal Guernsey Militia Museum. Each museum showcases different aspects of Guernsey's past, from its seafaring heritage to its military history. Explore the castle grounds and discover four historic gardens, each reflecting a different period in the castle's history. The 16th-century Sutler's Garden features herbs for kitchen use, while Lambert's Garden focuses on medicinal herbs. The 18th-century Governor's Garden is a formal space, and the 19th-century Master Gunner's Garden reflects domestic life. Don't miss the daily firing of the Noonday Gun, a tradition performed by gunners in 19th-century costume. The castle also hosts open-air concerts and events during the summer months.
