History of Upper Demerara-Berbice

Long before European colonization, the region of Upper Demerara-Berbice was inhabited by Indigenous peoples such as the Arawaks, Caribs, and Warao. These communities lived in harmony with the dense rainforests and utilized the land for farming, hunting, and fishing. Their rich cultural heritage still influences the area today.
