Discover more about Joliet's First Sidewalks Historic Site

Joliet's First Sidewalks Historic Site offers a unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the city's founders. Located on North Bluff Street, this historical landmark showcases the original sidewalks that have been an integral part of the community's infrastructure. As you explore the site, you'll notice the craftsmanship and engineering that went into creating these walkways. The sidewalks, made of stone or wood cut from the bluffs, were laid on both sides of Bluff Street, which was once wider than it is today. Informative plaques dot the landscape, providing historical context and insights into the lives of those who walked these paths. The site serves as a reminder of the city's development and the changes that have shaped the community. The Will-Joliet Bicentennial Corporation initiated a project in the 1980s to preserve the memory of the area by placing large boulders at certain sites. Bronze plaques were mounted on the boulders to tell the stories of the early merchants and artisans who established their homes and businesses there. Today, the site provides a serene setting for quiet contemplation and appreciation of the past.
