Discover more about Ahmedshah Badshah's Tomb (4 Ahmed)

Ahmedshah Badshah's Tomb, locally known as Badshah no Hajiro or Raja no Hajiro (King's Mausoleum), is a significant historical and religious site in Ahmedabad. This medieval mosque and group of tombs mark the final resting place of Ahmed Shah I, the founder of Ahmedabad, and several members of his family. Located in the heart of the old city, near the Jama Masjid and the vibrant Manek Chowk, the tomb provides a tranquil contrast to the surrounding chaos. Ahmed Shah I, who ruled the Muzaffarid dynasty and the state of Gujarat from 1411 to 1442, founded Ahmedabad in 1411 and declared it as his capital. The tomb complex was initiated by Ahmed Shah I, and completed in 1451 by his son, Muhammad Shah II. Inside the main chamber lie the tombs of Ahmed Shah I, his son Muhammad Shah II, and his grandson Qutb-ud-Din Ahmad Shah II. The tomb of Ahmed Shah's brother is located outside the main chamber. The architecture of the tomb features a main square building topped with a large central dome, with smaller domed chambers at each corner. The structure is built on a raised platform using yellow sandstone. The chamber is lit by delicately carved stone screens, known as jaalis, displaying floral and geometric Islamic motifs. A unique tradition is the playing of Naubat, a traditional orchestra, at the Naubat Khana (drum room) above the entrance, a practice that dates back to the city's founding. The ninth generation of Naubat musicians continues to play nagara and shehnai daily. Visiting the tomb offers a glimpse into the grandeur of Mughal architecture and the rich history of Ahmedabad. Note that women are not allowed to enter the central chamber, and men are required to cover their heads before entering.
