History of Michiana

Indigenous Homelands and the Treaty Era

Before American settlement, the St Joseph River basin was home to Potawatomi, Miami and other Indigenous peoples whose economies combined farming, hunting, fishing and river travel. The Potawatomi village at what became known as Twin Branches, near present-day Mishawaka, was among the communities affected by expanding United States control. Nineteenth-century treaties and forced removals, including the Potawatomi Trail of Death in 1838, transformed the region’s population and landholding patterns. Indigenous history remains an essential part of Michiana’s story, even though much of the visible built environment dates from the later settlement period.

Canals, Mills and Early Settlement

American settlement expanded rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s as roads, mills and waterways made the St Joseph River corridor commercially useful. South Bend grew at a bend in the river, while Mishawaka developed around river-powered industry. The proposed and partly developed canal connections of the period were soon overtaken by rail, but they helped establish the river towns as trading and manufacturing centres. Goshen and Elkhart also emerged as county seats and market towns, serving surrounding agricultural districts and attracting merchants, craftsmen and new agricultural settlers.

Railways and Industrial Michiana

Rail connections in the mid-nineteenth century changed Michiana’s scale and direction of growth. They linked local farms and factories with Chicago, Detroit and wider national markets, encouraging ironworking, furniture production, farm machinery and other industries. Elkhart became associated with musical instruments, while South Bend’s factories supported a diverse industrial economy. Rail travel also strengthened the region’s position between the major Great Lakes cities, helping its towns move beyond river-based commerce and making them more accessible to business, migration and higher education.

Studebaker and the Motor Age

The Studebaker family’s wagon business developed in South Bend in the nineteenth century and later moved into automobile production. Studebaker became one of the city’s defining employers and an important American vehicle manufacturer, producing cars until the company’s South Bend operations ended in the 1960s. Its legacy survives in the Studebaker National Museum, surviving industrial buildings and the city’s civic memory. The story also illustrates the vulnerability of single-industry cities as manufacturing became more competitive and production shifted within the United States and overseas.

Notre Dame and Catholic Educational Heritage

The University of Notre Dame was founded in 1842 by the French priest Edward Sorin of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Its campus north of South Bend grew from a small nineteenth-century college into an internationally recognised Catholic university. The Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the Main Building with its Golden Dome and later Gothic Revival structures express the institution’s religious and educational identity. Notre Dame has shaped the region through scholarship, employment, architecture, sport and cultural life, while the neighbouring College of Saint Mary’s adds another important strand to local higher-education history.

Recreation Vehicles and Modern Manufacturing

Elkhart County became a major centre of recreational-vehicle manufacturing during the twentieth century, drawing on earlier experience in woodworking, furniture and metalwork. The industry expanded strongly after the Second World War and remains central to the county’s economy, although its fortunes fluctuate with fuel prices, credit conditions and wider consumer demand. The RV/MH Hall of Fame and Museum in Elkhart interprets this national industry through vehicles, design history and manufacturing stories.
