Getting There

    Lake Manawa State Park has multiple entrances. From I-29, take Exit 47 and head west on Highway 92, then turn onto East Manawa Drive to reach the east entrance. To reach the west entrance, take Exit 3 from I-80, follow the South Expressway to Highway 92, then take Highway 92 to South 11th Street and head south to South Shore Drive. Parking lots are available at the west, north, and east entrances, as well as by the park office. Non-residents must pay a $5 daily vehicle entrance fee. Parking is free.

  • Public Transport

    While Council Bluffs doesn't directly operate public transit, it contracts with Metro, the Transit Authority of the City of Omaha, Nebraska. Metro operates two fixed routes through Council Bluffs, connecting to downtown Omaha. From downtown Council Bluffs, you can catch a Metro bus, but expect a walk of over 30 minutes from the nearest bus stop to the park. A single ride fare is $1.25. Transfers cost $0.25. Bus routes can be waved down along Council Bluffs metro routes, even if there are no bus stops nearby.

Lake Manawa State Park offers a refreshing escape into nature within the Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The park's centerpiece, Lake Manawa, was created in 1881 when a Missouri River flood carved out an oxbow. Originally known as "Cutoff Lake," it quickly became a recreation hotspot, earning the moniker "The Coney Island of the Midwest". While the early 20th century brought challenges like tornadoes and fires, the area was designated a state park in the 1930s. Today, Lake Manawa State Park provides diverse recreational opportunities. Camping is available at the Lake Manawa State Park Campground, which features 40 sites with amenities such as a gated entrance, full hook-up campsites, and a shower house. Reservations are required.
