The Rensselaer Russell House Museum, located in Waterloo, Iowa, offers a captivating journey into the Victorian era. Built in 1861 for Rensselaer Russell, a real estate investor and dealer of dry goods, this two-story brick house is one of the oldest homes in Black Hawk County and is considered one of Iowa's finest examples of Italianate architecture. The house has been meticulously restored to reflect the period of electrification in the 1890s, showcasing the upper-middle-class lifestyle of a prominent Waterloo family. Visitors can explore the classic Victorian interior, complete with original furnishings and family belongings, including an 1889 Steinway grand piano, which was one of the first in the area. The surrounding gardens add to the picturesque setting, providing a glimpse into the past. Rensselaer Russell was a prominent figure in Waterloo, arriving from New York in 1857. He and his wife, Caroline, built the house for $5,878.83 and later donated land across the street for Washington Park. The area where he lived was later named Russell Square in his honor. The house itself was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Today, the Rensselaer Russell House Museum is part of the Grout Museum District, offering guided tours that bring to life the stories of the Russell family and their experiences in Victorian Waterloo.
