Discover more about Khanzad Castle

Khanzad Castle, alternatively known as Banaman Castle, is a medieval castle constructed in the 16th century by Mir Khanzad, a princess who ruled the Soran Emirate. Khanzad, also referred to as the "Kurdish Warrior Queen", was known for her courage, intelligence, and leadership. The castle served as both her residence and a strategic defense point for Erbil. Located approximately 22 kilometers east of Erbil on the Erbil-Shaqlawa Road, the castle sits atop a hill, offering commanding views of the surrounding Harir plains. Its architecture features traditional Kurdish design, utilizing stones and gypsum in its construction. The structure includes four round towers at each corner and two stories. Khanzad ruled the Soran Emirate for seven years after the death of her brother, avenging his poisoning by executing those responsible. She commanded a large army and contributed to the region by building roads, schools, and mosques. The castle has become a symbol of Kurdish pride and a reminder of the region's history. Restoration efforts in the 1970s helped preserve the castle, making it a valuable historical site for visitors.
