Discover more about The Royal Hospital Kilmainham

The Royal Hospital Kilmainham, located in Dublin 8, is a significant historical and architectural landmark. Constructed between 1680 and 1684, it stands as Ireland's oldest classical building and a prime example of 17th-century architecture. King Charles II commissioned the building at the urging of James Butler, the first Duke of Ormond, to serve as a retirement home for soldiers. Inspired by Les Invalides in Paris, the Royal Hospital Kilmainham provided accommodation for army veterans for nearly 250 years. Designed by William Robinson, it features a formal facade and a large courtyard, reflecting the architectural style of the era. The building's design also incorporates elements of a medieval monastery, such as a cloister, great hall and chapel. In 1927, the hospital closed, and the building was subsequently used by the Garda Síochána (Irish Police) and as a storage facility for the National Museum of Ireland. After falling into disrepair, it was extensively renovated in the 1980s. In 1991, the Royal Hospital Kilmainham was re-opened as the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). Today, the Royal Hospital Kilmainham houses the Irish Museum of Modern Art and hosts various events. Visitors can explore the museum's collection of modern and contemporary art, wander through the formal gardens, and learn about the building's rich history. The site also includes a chapel, great hall, burial grounds, and artist studios.
