Discover more about Coole Park Nature Reserve

Coole Park Nature Reserve, a sprawling 1,000-acre estate a few miles west of Gort in County Galway, offers visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and rich literary history. This diverse landscape encompasses woodlands, a turlough (seasonal lake), rivers, and bare limestone, creating a haven for wildlife and a place of tranquility for visitors. For centuries, Coole Park has been a place of significance. In 1768, Robert Gregory purchased approximately 600 acres, establishing the estate and planting trees from around the world. His descendants continued this tradition, expanding the estate to around 15,000 acres by the 1850s. The family's legacy continued when William Henry Gregory married Isabella Augusta Persse, later known as Lady Gregory, who transformed Coole Park into a hub for the Irish Literary Revival. Coole House, the former Gregory family residence, became a gathering place for renowned writers and artists, including W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, John Millington Synge, and Sean O'Casey. These literary figures found inspiration in the park's serene landscapes, and many left their mark on the Autograph Tree, a copper beech in the walled garden bearing their carved initials. Though the house was demolished in 1941, its legacy lives on through the park's preserved natural beauty and literary associations. Today, Coole Park Nature Reserve is managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service. Visitors can explore the park's six kilometers of marked trails, discover the Autograph Tree, and learn about the park's history and ecology at the visitor center. The park's unique turlough system, underground rivers, and diverse flora and fauna make it a Special Area of Conservation and a Wetland of International Importance.
