Discover more about Funicolare Zecca-Righi - Capolinea Largo Zecca

The Funicolare Zecca-Righi, historically known as the Funicolare del Righi, is a funicular railway that connects the center of Genoa with the Righi heights. The lower station is located at Largo Zecca, near Via Carlo Targa. The upper station is located in Castellaccio, near Monte Peralto. In 1890, administrators approved a project by Swiss citizens Franz Josef Bucher and his son Teodoro, who had experience building similar structures in their homeland. The original design consisted of two sections: an underground segment from Largo Zecca to San Nicola, and an open-air segment from San Nicola to Castellaccio. The upper section opened in 1895, and the lower section opened in 1897. In 1966, the two lines were unified. The ride offers a striking change of scenery, transitioning from the city's busy traffic to the hills. At the top, trails lead to the city's ancient forts. The Madonnetta station is near the Sanctuary of the same name, which features a year-round Nativity scene depicting medieval Genoa. The funicular is a popular departure point for hikes and bike rides.
