The palace itself dates back to the 12th century, initially constructed by the Aldobrandeschi family before passing to the Orsini family in 1312. The Orsini family expanded the palace, fortifying it with three circular towers, perimeter walls, drawbridges, and both public and secret entrances. In the 16th century, the palace underwent further enhancements, including interior restorations and the addition of pentagonal bastions. Today, the museum's 21 rooms display a diverse collection of art and artifacts. Visitors can admire wooden sculptures, antique furniture, gold and silver jewelry, ancient coins, paintings on canvas and wood, and precious fabrics from regional places of worship. Highlights include a 15th-century wooden statue of Count Niccolò III Orsini and paintings by Francesco Zuccarelli. The Room of the Loggette features a cycle of frescoes portraying the Orsini Counts. The museum also houses the Civic Archaeological Museum, displaying artifacts from Etruscan settlements in the area.
