Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista: A Romanesque Jewel in Matera

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, located in Matera, is a captivating church with a rich history that dates back to the 13th century. Initially built as Santa Maria la Nova in 1233, the church was constructed outside the city walls, marking it as the first sacred structure beyond the original urban boundaries. The church's origins trace back to the arrival of the Penitents of Saint Mary of Acre from Palestine, who were granted the chapel of Santa Maria la Nova. Over the centuries, the church has experienced periods of abandonment and restoration. In 1695, it was reopened for worship and dedicated to San Giovanni Battista. The architecture of the church showcases a blend of different styles, including Romanesque, Arab, Gothic, and Greek influences. The interior features three naves separated by pillars with decorated capitals, showcasing zoomorphic and floral motifs. The right side of the church features a portal adorned with plant motifs and animal sculptures. Today, the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista stands as a testament to Matera's layered history and architectural evolution, offering visitors a glimpse into the city's medieval past.
