Discover more about Via Maestà delle Volte

Via Maestà delle Volte, likely the most beautiful street in Perugia, is a captivating journey through the city's medieval and Renaissance heritage. Despite being just over 100 meters long, this picturesque street offers an intricate narrative of Perugia's architectural evolution and artistic history. Its name originates from a 14th-century fresco, Maestà delle Volte, depicting the Madonna with Child. In earlier times, Via Maestà delle Volte was a narrow passage covered by vaults supporting a hall of the Palazzo della Podestà, which was destroyed by fire in 1534. Remnants of these vaults can still be seen at the beginning of the street. On the right is the 16th-century Palazzo del Seminario, the current seat of the Museo Capitolare di San Lorenzo. The left side of the street is formed by the back of the Palazzo Vescovile. At the end of the street, one faces the façade of the Maestà delle Volte Church, built between 1580 and 1590 over a 14th-century oratory. Only a red and white striped arch remains of the original oratory. The street also features the Fountain of Via Maestà delle Volte, constructed in 1928 by architect Pietro Angelini. A carved griffin, the emblem of Perugia, adorns the fountain's central basin. Today, Via Maestà delle Volte offers not only architectural marvels but also charming artisan shops tucked behind unassuming doors. These spaces, often under brick barrel vaults, showcase handcrafted sculptures and wooden objects—perfect mementos of this enchanting walk.
