Discover more about Museo di Arte Sacra Beato Angelico

The Museo di Arte Sacra Beato Angelico, located in Piazza Don Milani, Vicchio, is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the sacred art of the Mugello region. The museum is named after Fra Angelico (Guido di Pietro), the famous early Renaissance painter who was born in Vicchio in the late 14th century. The museum was established to safeguard important religious artworks from the area, emphasizing their artistic value and their close ties to local culture. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, and liturgical objects, primarily sourced from churches in the Mugello area. These works were often recovered from churches that were abandoned as the rural population declined. The museum's thematic arrangement seeks to reconnect these works of art and devotion to their original cultural context. Exhibits include a 13th-century holy water font, a Madonna and Child with Angels by the Master of the Straus Madonna (late 14th century), a polyptych by the Master of Montefoscoli (first half of the 15th century), and the Annunciation by Francesco Furini (17th century). The museum also features a glazed terracotta of Saint John the Baptist attributed to Andrea della Robbia and a monstrance attributed to Massimiliano Soldani Benzi. The museum first opened in 1967, closed in 1993, and reopened in 2000 with its current layout. It aims to highlight not only the artistic merit of the objects but also their relationship to the social and historical context in which they were created.
