The Riserva Naturale Bosco dei Rocconi is located within the municipalities of Roccalbegna and Semproniano in the province of Grosseto. This natural reserve spans 371 hectares and includes the WWF Oasis Bosco Rocconi. The WWF purchased the first 130 hectares of the reserve in 1995. The landscape is characterized by steep rocky walls, deep gorges and dense forests, with elevations reaching 500 meters. Two streams, the Albegna River and the Rigo stream, traverse the protected area. The reserve has diverse flora, including holm oaks, maples and manna ash. In damper areas, you'll find poplars, elms and hornbeams. The Bosco dei Rocconi is home to over 28 species of orchids. The fauna includes the crested newt, yellow-bellied toad, Hermann's tortoise, peregrine falcon and lanner falcon. The caves within the reserve provide habitat for the Polyxena butterfly and an endemic cricket. Visitors can explore the reserve by hiking, biking or horseback riding. The WWF offers guided tours on Saturdays and Sundays, which require a reservation. The main trail is approximately 6 km long and takes about 3-4 hours to complete.
