Discover more about Parco Archeologico di Segesta

The Parco Archeologico di Segesta invites visitors to step back in time and explore the fascinating ruins of an ancient city with Elymian roots. According to legend, Segesta was founded by survivors of the Trojan War. While archaeological evidence suggests the Elymians may have come from an island, Segesta quickly became a prominent city, heavily influenced by Greek culture. Its strategic importance led to conflicts with Selinunte and alliances with both Carthage and Rome. The park's main attractions include the unfinished Doric temple, a majestic structure that stands as a testament to ancient Greek architectural prowess. Construction was likely halted due to war. The ancient theater, built in the 3rd century BC, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and once hosted thousands of spectators. Visitors can also explore the remains of the ancient city on Mount Barbaro, including the agora, medieval castle, and a 15th-century church. The Sanctuary of Contrada Mango, dating back to the 6th-5th centuries BC, is another significant site. Walking trails wind through the park, allowing visitors to discover the natural beauty of the area while immersing themselves in history.
