Eishoji Temple: A Sanctuary of History and Healing

Eishoji Temple, nestled in Yamamotomachi, Kurume, is a historic Buddhist temple with roots stretching back to 680 AD. Founded by Emperor Tenmu, it's dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai, the deity of medicinal healing, with prayers initially offered for the emperor's wife. The temple is revered as one of Japan's Three Major Temples of Medicinal Healing, alongside Ichibata Temple and Yamada Temple. Visitors will encounter giant cedar tree trunks upon climbing the stone steps leading to Eisho-zenji Temple. Within the grounds, Nio statues from the Edo period greet visitors, along with Buddhist stone sculptures, including a Jizo statue for healing whooping cough and a statue of Monju Bosatsu, the deity of wisdom. The temple also features trees like the Japanese Raisin, a Municipally Designated Natural Monument. In autumn, the temple grounds transform into a vibrant display of colorful leaves.
