Discover more about Nihon Canyon

Nihon Canyon, situated in the Matsukami area of Fukaura, Aomori Prefecture, presents a striking natural landscape. This area, also known as 'Japan Canyon', features towering white cliffs formed from volcanic tuff, sculpted over time by erosion. The canyon's name was inspired by the Grand Canyon in the United States, owing to the similar rugged rock formations. The canyon is located on the Sea of Japan side of the Shirakami Mountains, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, and within the Tsugaru Quasi-National Park. While not part of the World Heritage area itself, Nihon Canyon contributes to the region's overall natural allure. The contrast between the stark white cliffs and the lush green beech forests creates a stunning visual experience. Explorer Kishimori is credited with naming Nihon Canyon in 1953 after noting its resemblance to the Grand Canyon. The area was previously known as Mt. Higurashi. Some theories suggest that glacial activity contributed to the canyon's formation. Visitors can reach the Nihon Canyon observation deck via a mountain trail from the parking lot near Juniko's Hakkei Pond, involving a 20-minute climb. For those less inclined to hike, the canyon can also be viewed from National Route 101 or the Juniko loop course.
