Discover more about Children's Peace Monument

The Children's Peace Monument stands as a touching tribute to the children who perished as a result of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Inaugurated on May 5, 1958, Children's Day in Japan, the monument was born from the heartfelt initiative of Sadako Sasaki's classmates, who, deeply moved by her death from leukemia caused by the bomb's radiation, launched a nationwide fundraising campaign. Their efforts garnered support from over 3,100 schools in Japan and nine international schools. The monument's design, created by Kazuo Kikuchi, features a nine-meter-high stone dome topped with a bronze statue of a young girl holding a golden paper crane. The statue of Sadako with outstretched arms holding a crane, represents hope and healing. Inside the monument hangs a replica of a peace bell donated by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Hideki Yukawa. The inscription on the monument reads: "This is our cry, this is our prayer; to build peace in the world". Visitors to the monument are greeted by countless colorful origami cranes, placed there by people from around the world, each carrying a wish for peace. The act of folding and offering these cranes has become an international symbol of peace, inspired by Sadako's story. The Children's Peace Monument serves not only as a memorial but also as a beacon of hope, reminding all who visit of the importance of peace and the devastating consequences of war.
