Discover more about Pond of Peace

The Pond of Peace, located in Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park, is more than just a body of water; it's a symbol of hope and remembrance. Constructed to encircle the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims, the pond was designed to give the illusion that the monument is floating peacefully. This design choice reflects a desire to create a space for contemplation and to honor those who lost their lives in the atomic bombing. The pond's construction was completed on August 3, 1957, thanks to a contribution from the Japan Junior Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Initially, it was a smaller, 2-meter wide pond surrounding the monument on three sides. However, with the installation of the Flame of Peace in 1964, the pond was expanded to its current dimensions of 17 meters wide and 70 meters long. This expansion further enhanced the pond's visual impact and its role as a central element within the park. The Pond of Peace is also aligned to frame the Flame of Peace and the A-Bomb Dome. The Flame of Peace, which sits at the northern edge of the pond, was lit on August 1, 1964, and will remain lit until all nuclear weapons are abolished. Today, the Pond of Peace continues to serve as a place for visitors to reflect on the past and contemplate the future. The gentle sounds of the water and the surrounding greenery create a serene atmosphere, inviting introspection and a moment of quiet amidst the bustling city.
