Discover more about Tower of Winds / Toyo Ito

The Tower of Winds stands as a testament to modern architecture and environmental design in the heart of Yokohama. Designed by Toyo Ito, this 21-meter cylindrical structure was originally a concrete water tower for the underground shopping center beneath it. In 1986, Ito transformed the tower into a dynamic sculpture that interacts with its environment through light and sound. During the day, the tower's perforated aluminum panels reflect the city, creating a subtle yet intricate relationship with its surroundings. At night, the Tower of Winds comes alive, converting sound and wind into light. Two computers monitor wind and noise levels, activating 1,300 lamps, 12 neon rings, and 30 floodlights to produce an ever-changing visual display. The lights change colors based on the wind's noise level, while the rings adjust their intensity according to its speed. The Tower of Winds exemplifies Ito's architectural philosophy, emphasizing technology's role in connecting nature and the urban environment. It serves as a landmark that welcomes travelers arriving at Yokohama Station, offering a space for contemplation and interaction. The tower won the 1987 Edwin Guth Memorial Award of Excellence for its innovative design.
