Discover more about Kazurabashi (Kazura Bridge)

The Kazurabashi at Shikoku Mura is a meticulously recreated vine bridge, modeled after those found in the remote Iya Valley of Tokushima Prefecture. These bridges were historically vital for traversing the steep valleys of the region. Legend has it that the original vine bridges were built by members of the defeated Heike clan, who sought refuge in the Iya Valley after the Genpei War in the 12th century. The easily severed vines provided a means to evade pursuers. The replica at Shikoku Mura is constructed using 3.5 tons of hardy kiwi vines, intertwined to create a suspension bridge that evokes the spirit of the original. Although reinforced with steel cables for safety, the bridge retains a sense of adventure, swaying gently as visitors cross. This swaying motion led Japanologist Donald Keene to remark that crossing the bridge felt like stepping into another world. Shikoku Mura itself is an open-air museum that exhibits relocated and restored traditional buildings from across Shikoku Island. The Kazurabashi is one of the park's most popular attractions, offering visitors a glimpse into the history and ingenuity of the region's people.
