Getting There

Car
If you're traveling by car, start by getting onto the Tohoku Expressway. From Sendai, head north on the expressway towards Morioka. After approximately 1.5 hours and around 90 km, take the exit for Iwate Kesen Road. Follow the signs towards Sumita. The cave is located at Tsuchikura-298-81, which is about 20 minutes from the exit. Make sure to check for parking upon arrival, as there are designated areas near the cave entrance.

Train + Bus
For those using public transportation, take the Tohoku Shinkansen from any major city in Tohoku (like Sendai or Morioka) to Morioka Station. From Morioka Station, transfer to the Iwate Galaxy Railway and take a train to Sumita Station. This journey will take about 2 hours in total. Upon arriving at Sumita Station, you can catch a local bus towards Tsuchikura. The bus ride takes around 30 minutes, and you will need to get off at the Tsuchikura stop. From there, it's a short walk to Rōkandō Cave.

If you prefer to take a bus from Morioka, you can catch an express bus from Morioka Bus Terminal that goes directly to Sumita. The bus ride takes approximately 1.5 hours. Once you arrive at the Sumita Bus Terminal, you can take a local bus or taxi to Tsuchikura. The taxi ride will take about 15 minutes, and local buses may have limited schedules, so check the latest timetable in advance.
