Discover more about 追後スリバチ

The 追後スリバチ, or Oigo Suribachi, is a captivating hollow nestled within the Tottori Sand Dunes. Its name, meaning "grinding bowl" in Japanese, aptly describes its concave form. This depression was created by wind erosion over millennia. It presents a unique landscape within the dunes. Once numbering over 30, these suribachi formations have dwindled, making 追後スリバチ a precious example of this geological phenomenon. The hollow's steep slopes, reaching gradients of up to 32 degrees and a height difference of 20 meters, create a dramatic and visually striking environment. In the past, the area was known as "大井古 (Oigo)," suggesting the presence of a spring or well. While the oasis may no longer be readily apparent, the name hints at a time when travelers sought refreshment within this sandy expanse. Today, 追後スリバチ offers a chance to witness the ever-changing nature of the dunes and appreciate the subtle beauty of this natural wonder. Keep an eye out for the wind ripples (fūmon) and sand collapse patterns (saren) on the slopes, further illustrating the dynamic forces at play.
