History of Azraq Oasis

Azraq Oasis has served as a crucial water source in the arid region of eastern Jordan for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests that the area was inhabited as early as the Paleolithic period, with various ancient cultures relying on its springs for survival.
During the Roman Empire, Azraq Oasis was a strategic military outpost. The Romans built a fort, known as Qasr Azraq, around the 3rd century AD. This fortress played a key role in controlling the trade routes that traversed the region, and its basalt stone structure still stands today.
Following the decline of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine and later the Umayyad Caliphates left their marks on Azraq. The oasis continued to be a vital stop for traders and pilgrims. The Umayyads, in particular, reinforced the fort and expanded its facilities, including the construction of a mosque within its walls.
Azraq Oasis gained international fame during World War I, when T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, used the area as a base for his operations.
